Jong-Cheon Kim
Voice of Experience
Claims consultant Captain Jong-Cheon ("J.C.")
Kim leads Aurora Law Offices' marine and non-marine insurance
services practice. J.C. also helps us with fraud and debt
recovery operations, lending his years of experience as an
insurer to dealing with unwilling debtors.
After a short stopover with another small law
firm, Capt. Kim joined Aurora in March 2001 from Hyundai Marine
& Fire Insurance Co., Ltd., where he led the legal department.
Before joining Hyundai, he sailed for six years as a deck officer
with Sanko Steamship Co., Ltd., a Japanese line; Zodiac Line, a
British concern; and other shippers.
As an adjuster, Capt. Kim has extensive
experience handling marine
and non-marine insurance-related matters. Over his 18-year career
he has built an invaluable network of contacts in the insurance
industry worldwide and with the Korean maritime administration.
Dealing with slippery shipowners and charterers for so long has
left him with acutely-developed negotiation, collection and enforcement
skills.
Aurora Law Offices has Korea's only maritime
law practice with
an actual seaman on the team. This enables us to provide further
value-added services to clients in areas such as taking statements
from crews and investigating marine casualties, accidents and
fraud.
Capt. Kim is an engineering graduate of the Korea Maritime
University in Pusan, well-known as the wellspring of the so-called
"Pusan Mafia" of maritime professionals.
He also holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Admiralty from the
Korea Maritime University, as well as a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.)
degree from Korea National Open University. He is currently a
Ph.D. candidate in Admiralty at the Korea Maritime University,
and has taken leave from that program to study in the United States.
How does he do it? Coffee, lots of coffee.
