Hong-Kyoung Kim
A Practical Business Counsellor
Few lawyers in any country have actual work experience,
but still fewer Korean lawyers have ever held any job outside the law.
Prior to becoming a lawyer, Hong-Kyoung Kim worked for a living for
several years with trading companies, one of them a major Korean company
and one American multinational.
From this experience, he gained a valuable comparative
perspective on operations and management of businesses in Korea. And he came to know
that the essential and proper role of the lawyer is to bring disputes to a speedy resolution, or to avoid disputes altogether.
After graduating college, HK joined Samsung Corporation,
the general trading company of Korea’s leading Samsung group. He became
a manager in the automotive and truck tire-trading division, responsible
for relations with suppliers and customers in Korea and worldwide. He
left Samsung to join Goodyear Korea, the local subsidiary of the world’s
leading tire manufacturer. Joining the multinational corporation, and
getting to know employees and managers at Goodyear subsidiaries in other
countries, broadened HK’s perspective on the world and Korea’s place
therein.
After being called to the Korean bar, HK joined Jin
& Lee, a well-respected smaller firm. His practice there focused on
general commercial and civil litigation, with particular experience
representing cargo interests in dry shipping matters. From litigating
dozens of business matters, his belief that all concerned are best served
by avoiding resort to the courts was reinforced.
In 2005, HK received the British Council and Law Society of England & Wales' inaugural Chevening Fellowship for promising Korean lawyers. During his fellowship visit to London, he completed the Young Lawyers' Training Scheme with a joint class of Brazilian and Korean lawyers, and a placement with the shipping department of major international law firm DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary.
Hong-Kyoung Kim is a graduate of Seoul National University,
where he majored in German language and literature.
