The 800-lb. Gorilla

With about 300 professionals, Kim & Chang is the largest firm in Korea and also the biggest in Asia. Kim & Chang is packed with a constellation of stars and heavyweights. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need. Other times that's exactly what you don't need.

The Next Biggest

The last few years have seen a spate of mergers among the medium-sized Korean firms, partly to bulk up to compete with Kim & Chang, and partly in preparation for the expected opening of the Korean legal market to entry by foreign law firms. We think this kind of "we're big, too" approach is misguided. To compete with a giant, one needs to be smarter, not bigger.

Before 1998, this rank of firms was comprised of firms numbering 35-50 professionals. Now, thanks to mergers and massive hiring of fresh graduates, each of these "next-biggest" firms numbers 120-150.
