Each of us previously worked at other Korean law firms, but were dissatisfied personally and professionally. Personally, because the pace of work left little time for private lives. Profesionally, because the volume of cases meant that service standards were poor.

We identified too much work, and a focus on the billable hour, as the problem. So Aurora's billable-hour ceiling (not minimum, but maximum) is 1450 hours annually, or about 120 hours per month. No professional is expected to bill more.

Why Not?

Our humane case loads leave us time to read, think, learn, and spend time with friends and families. Most importantly, there is a direct client benefit -- our policy allows us to really "be there" when clients need us. By not being 120% overcommitted as a normal condition, we are able to give 120% when a client needs our extra attention and energy for an urgent project.

We think this makes us the most responsive law firm in Korea, with service more friendly and personal than what has traditionally been available in this market.

Service is our distinguishing characteristic. We do not try to compete on fees; our hourly rates, when we charge by the hour, are comparable to leading law firms in Korea. And in many cases, we try to agree in writing on a fixed fee for work (please see our discussion of why fixed fee pricing is right for cross-border legal work).
